Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) is one of Australia 's leading teaching tertiary hospitals. The Hospital has over 600 beds and employs approximately 5,000 staff who treat over 420,000 patients every year.
Located at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre 4km from Perth city centre, SCGH provides a comprehensive range of clinical services including trauma, emergency and critical care, orthopaedics, general medicine, general surgery and cardiac care. It is home to WA's only comprehensive cancer centre - the largest cancer treatment centre in the State - and is the state's principal hospital for neurosurgery and liver transplants.
SCGH has an international reputation for ground-breaking medical research and is home to Nobel Laureate Professor Barry Marshall, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2005 for his groundbreaking work demonstrating that stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria and not stress.
The Hospital has strong links with all major universities in WA. It is a teaching hospital for medical graduates from the University of Western Australia and the University of Notre Dame Australia and is the employer of choice for new nursing graduates.
SCGH is set to become part of WA's new 'super hospital' when a new children's hospital and a new women's hospital are built alongside. The three hospitals will have a combined total of approximately 1,100 beds making it the largest medical facility in the State.
SCGH, which first opened its doors in 1958, is named after Sir Charles Gairdner, a former governor of Western Australia . The Hospital is fully accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.
