As a tertiary care hospital in the western region of Saudi Arabia, the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre-Jeddah has an important role to play in setting healthcare standards locally, nationally and internationally.
We have established challenging goals for ourselves, both as an institution and as individuals, which provide the framework for achieving excellence.
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center – Jeddah main building
King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center-Jeddah is committed as a leader in promoting health, research and education for the well-being of patients, staff and community.
To become the premier international center of excellence for health, medical training and research
King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center-Jeddah opened in April 2000.
The first few months saw the establishment of the Hospital mission, vision and core values and the opening of several important services and units. Throughout its first year of operation, KFSH&RC-Jeddah experienced significant and rapid growth as capacity increased from an initial 50 beds to 100. By September 2001, capacity had reached 200 beds, all planned services, i.e., open heart surgery, high acuity ICU, renal transplant, were implemented and newly renovated areas were opened.
In keeping with the Hospital’s mission and vision statements, this latter time also witnessed the beginnings of its international collaboration policies where ties were established with major centers around the world.
By June 2002, KFSH&RC-Jeddah expanded its capacity to 235 beds and continued its record of significant achievements, demonstrated by the first lung and bone marrow transplantation surgeries. Focusing on the operative and administrative goals of the Hospital, this period also saw accreditation achieved from both Saudi Aramco and JCIA. At the time, KFSH&RC-Jeddah was one of only three hospitals in the Middle East to be recognized by JCIA in this manner; a truly remarkable feat, given the comparatively short time the Hospital had been in existence.
The Hospital’s mission and vision statements were a focal point in the decision-making processes that occurred during the latter part of 2002 and the beginning of 2003. The importance of providing high quality tertiary health care to the local and regional communities required an adjustment in business and financial policies where more focus was given to cost containment, productivity measures and right sizing the services, together with an executive initiative to increase private activities and revenue. These decisions, as well as a Royal Grant issued by our esteemed sponsor, have resulted in significant, progressive growth to the point where KFSH&RC-Jeddah is now regarded as a regional leader in public-private partnership initiatives.
KFSH&RC-Jeddah continues in its forward thinking and progressive outlook. Over the last three years innovative steps have been taken resulting in the establishment of four centers of excellence; Oncology, Cardiovascular, Neurosciences and Intensive Care Units. The Hospital has been an active participant in e-Health activities and is a strong supporter of the International eHealth Association.
The Research Center has gone through various developmental stages. By the end of 2004, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) had approved sixty research proposals, some of which were international clinical trials sponsored by leading pharmaceutical companies. In addition, the Research Center successfully initiated collaborative projects in medical and drug development research with organizations from the United States, China, and Germany. This success can be partially attributed to the scientific-consultative support of Jeddah BioCity, a biotechnology company, 40% owned by King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center-Jeddah.
Growth and expansion are anticipated for the next several years. The Amoudia Housing Project, first opened in 2003, is an example of the Hospital’s proactive planning and which, when completed, will provide exceptional accommodation for all staff at one, central location. Another such example, the Health Sciences Training Program implemented by the Department of Academic & Training Affairs in 2003 and accredited through the Saudi Council, was established to ensure trained health care professionals would be available as the Hospital’s needs expanded. This program has become very popular, with applications far exceeding available spaces.
As a new, growing organization, the first five years for KFSH&RC-Jeddah have been remarkable in their achievements and in the challenges presented. Throughout this time, the recognition and appreciation of staff have been of paramount importance to the Hospital’s Executive Management. Open communication and transparency were and are key principles, demonstrated through monthly general staff meetings, a weekly CEO newsletter, management and departmental retreats, and open door practices. These activities will be on-going as the Hospital continues into the next five years, always cognisant of the contributions and efforts of staff
